Charles Eldridge Morgan, Jr. was born in Philadelphia on 23 September 1844, the son of Charles Eldridge Morgan (1820-1899) and Jane Bowen Buck (1821-1900). Both parents were born in New Jersey. He fought in the Civil War at Landis Battery and the Battle of Gettysburg. He married Elizabeth Belsham Merrick (1850-1925) in New York in 1875 as identified in the New York City Marriages Index. They settled in Philadelphia where all three of their children were born. Charles is one of the founding members of the law firm Morgan, Lewis and Bockius. Charles Morgan died in Philadelphia on 04 March 1917, and is buried in Ivy Hill Cemetery, with arrangements by Kirk & Nice Undertakers of Germantown, Philadelphia. Cause of death was Lobar Pneumonia.

Elizabeth Belsham Merrick was born in New York, on 23 April 1850. The family is in Brooklyn, New York for the 1850 census. Both her parents, Thomas Belsham Merrick (1813-1902) and Elizabeth Marie White (1821-1902) were born and married in Hallowell, Maine. Elizabeth died in Philadelphia on 21 September, 1925 and is also buried at Ivy Hill Cemetery. They had three children:

  1. Charles Eldridge Morgan, 3rd (1876-1947), married Theresa Hamilton Fish (1885-?), in 1916 in Portland, Maine.
  2. Elizabeth Merrick Morgan (1879-?), married Walter Perry (1865-1946), date and location unknown. Elizabeth is the woman in the pink dress in the second portrait in my parents’ house. She was my mother’s god mother.
  3. Elizabeth Merrick Morgan (1879-??), She married Walter Perry.
  4. Hallowell Vaughan Morgan, Sr. (1888-1984) is my grandfather. Married Cintra Hutchinson. See separate file.

Charles and Elizabeth each remained in their parents’ homes until they married so the census information for 1850, 1860, and 1870 will be recorded in their respective fathers’ profiles: Charles Eldridge Morgan, Sr. and Thomas Belsham Merrick.

On August 14, 1914, Charles and Lillie Morgan filled out an emergency Passport Application at the American Embassy in London. This stated that they left the US on 01 July 1914. He also witnessed an application (on the next page) for Thomas McCreight on the same day; Thomas had departed on the same day also. They were possibly traveling together or may have met on the cruise. This emergency application is not surprising with the start of WWI on July 28, 1914. The travel journal for that day states: “August 14th … I then took a hack, as I had to finish a little shopping, … while C. and T. went for passports, and E to do numerous errands.” (p. 68). The first entry for the journal starts: “July 2nd – We are off again for a little spree in foreign lands, Charley, Eldridge, Thomas and I” so this is assumed to be Charles (husband), Eldridge (son), Thomas is unknown, possibly a companion for Eldridge, maybe the Thomas McCreight.

I have not located Lillie Morgan for the 1920 census. She is not living with Hallowell or with daughter, Elizabeth. I have not found Charles 3rd’s’ 1920 census.

There is a Find-A-Grave profile for Charles Jr. which states:

Civil War veteran: Landis’ Batterry, 1863, at the Battle of Gettysburg.
Graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, AB 1864, AM 1868.
Cofounder of the law firm of Morgan Lewis and Bockius.
Residence: Church Lane, Germantown.
Influential in the formation of the Philadelphia Cricket Club.
